How to Buy a Diamond
A diamond's quality and it's value are determined by using standards that are universally accepted and known as the 4 C's, they are Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat weight.
Cut
The cut of a diamond is not the actual shape of the diamond but refers to the correct proportions of the diamond, which enables light to be reflected through the stone. Regardless of shape, different cuts are required for different diamond shapes, every diamond gets its brilliance from the cutting and polishing of the diamond. A diamond cut to the correct proportions will reflect light in a way that will give off a radiance that is unrivaled. When a diamond is cut too shallow or too deep the light is lost through the bottom and the sides rather than reflecting back up through the top of the stone.
Color
As light passes through a diamond the true beauty of the stone becomes clear. When the light reflects back through the top of the diamond it is transformed into a rainbow of colors before your eyes. The less body color a diamond has a better rainbow of color will be exhibited.
Clarity
The clarity of a diamond refers to the number and location of imperfections a diamond has. These imperfections can be internal or on the surface. An imperfection can interfere with the reflection of light within the stone, therefor can hinder the brilliance of the diamond.
Carat Weight
The weight of a diamond is expressed in carats. And although size is a factor in the value of a diamond, two diamonds can weigh the same and have different values because of the differences in cut, clarity and color.
